Where To Meat New Friends

Southern Oregon is known for hunters and citizens with passion for barbecue.  Cooking, smoking, and packaging meat are specialties of Taylor’s Sausage in the town of Cave Junction.  This hidden Mecca of meat in the countryside is a must taste for any carnivore connoisseur.
According to the Taylor’s Sausage website, “We use the finest meats, natural spices, natural casings, natural smoking hardwoods and a minimum of preservatives.  We feel we make sausages second to none.”  Through personal experience, this statement is only begins to describe the quality of this company’s products.
Taylors offers many distinct flavors and types of sausage ranging from; German bratwurst, British bangers, Polish sausage and even Portuguese linguicia.  All of these sausages are deliciously aromatic and mouth-watering.  They also provide a large smoked meat selection which includes their signature Trailbuster beef strips.  There is nothing at Taylor’s that has not been exceptional in my experience.
Construction on the current incarnation of Taylors was finished in 2001 and the business employs 75 workers locally to work in their meat processing plant.  They’re open seven days a week and they have space provided for meals on the premises.  Take-out is always an option as well and products can be purchased fresh or frozen.
Visit Taylor’s Sausage in Cave Junction or order their products online at www.taylorsausage.com if you want a chance at trying some of the most delicious meat selection Southern Oregon has to offer.

A Piece Of Germany In Oregon

Jacksonville in Southern Oregon recently celebrated the town’s 150 year anniversary by having a week-long jubilee.  I went to several events at the jubilee, but one in particular stood out.  The Oktoberfest celebration held at Frau Kemmling’s Schoolhaus Brewhaus held the spirit of not only the jubilee, but also that of the famous Oktoberfest.
The event began with a 21-gun-salute to commence the festivities and to signal the tapping of the first keg.  Merriment broke out immediately with those in attendance chanting a German toast, “zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, oi, oi, oi,” loudly throughout the beer garden.  With steins raised, the energy from this toast could be felt throughout the crowd.
Food at the event was exquisite, with the best soft pretzels and bratwursts I had tasted in years.  The beer, with rare craft brews such as Dunkelweiss and Hefeweizen imported directly from Germany, gave the palettes of the crowd something exotic to imbibe.
The traditional Oompah bands playing in the beer garden were talented showmen.  The bands hosted many of the games such as drinking contests, bratwurst eating contests and a yodeling contest that the citizens of Jacksonville must have heard from miles around.
Of all the events I’ve experience in Southern Oregon; this one will certainly stand out in my memory.  This was the second annual Oktoberfest, so I would begin making plans to attend this exciting experience next year.  I know that I will certainly be a repeat guest.

A Lesson Learned Through Wings

His face dark red, tears streaming down his cheek, Damon Houck took another bite of the 911 Emergency Wing held in his hand. Heat from the world’s hottest pepper, the Naga Jolokia or “Ghost Pepper,” was causing profuse sweating and obvious pain in the boy’s face. But after devouring his sixth and final wing Houck proved that he was able to survive the heat and join an elite group of pepper enthusiasts in Southern Oregon.

Firehouse Wild Wings, a new restaurant in the city of Grants Pass, is producing hot wings for customers consisting of a myriad of flavors. At Wild Wings customers can enjoy the tastes of a raspberry chipotle, original buffalo or 911 emergency sauce. These are just a few of the many flavors available at Wild Wings.

The biggest draw to this establishment though would have to be the 911 Emergency Wing Challenge. In this challenge a participant has to eat six wings smothered in Ghost Pepper sauce in less than six minutes. The reward for those that succeed is free wings, a t-shirt and the glory of having a picture on the wall next to other wing competitors that have completed the challenge. But if you lose, prepare to receive a lifetime of scorn and ridicule from friends and family members.

When traveling in Southern Oregon, and especially in the Grants Pass area, I would suggest visiting this establishment if you have a desire for hot and a burning need to prove that you can eat more hot wings than your friends.
